Several reviews for this (and similar products) complained that it wasn't possible to get the straps tight. I used these straps to secure a rubber boot on a steering rack, and was able to get a very tight fit. Perhaps it comes down to technique...

First of all, these straps don't have ridges on them like plastic zip ties. Rather a small metal ball rolls inside a groove, and then tension on the strap holds the ball in place. So to get a good tight fit, it helps to orient the clasp so that gravity allows the ball to fall into the groove, rather than away from it.

Secondly you can't simply pull on the strap and expect it to tighten and hold like a plastic zip tie. Rather you must grasp the end of the strap tightly and pull in a straight line away from the buckle while holding the buckle in place (don't pull at an angle like plastic zip ties) They are quite slippery, so I used vice-grips set to almost fully closed. Pull the strap firmly in a fairly straight line away from the buckle . You need to hold the buckle in place while you pull, or the hole strap will rotate around whatever you are tightening it around. I used a large flat blade screwdriver against the buckle, and then levered the vice-grips against the screwdriver to get a good solid pull.

The results were very satisfactory IMO, and at $0.11 per strap, it was way cheaper than the $20 per unit that the dealership wanted for an OEM strap (plus the cost of the tool needed to install the OEM strap).

Would definitely recommend these, presuming that you are handy enough to figure out how to get them tight.
