Ignitable, Reactive, Toxic, Corrosive - MIT EHS

Ignitable

If you are looking for more details, kindly visit what is c&i energy.

Hazardous waste classified as ignitable includes the following:

  • Liquids with a flashpoint of less than 60°C / 140°F
  • Solids that burn spontaneously
  • Flammable compressed gas
  • Oxidizers
  • Materials with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS) flammability hazard rating of 3 or 4

Toxic

Hazardous waste classified as toxic contains one or more of 40 specific contaminants included in the TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) table:

  • Arsenic
  • Barium
  • Benzene
  • Cadmium
  • Carbon Tetrachloride
  • Chlordane
  • Chlorobenzene
  • Chloroform
  • Chromium
  • O-Cresol
  • M-Cresol
  • P-Cresol
  • Cresol
  • 2,4-D
  • 1,4 Dichlorobenzene
  • 1,2 Dichloroethane
  • 1,1 Dichloroethylene
  • 2,4 Dinitrotoluene
  • Endrin
  • Heptachlor
  • Hexachlorobenzene
  • Hexachlorobutadiene
  • Hexachloroethane
  • Lead
  • Lindane
  • Mercury
  • Methoxychlor
  • Methyl ethyl ketone
  • Nitrobenzene

  • Trichloroethylene
  • 2,4,5 Trichlorophenol
  • 2,4,6 Trichlorophenol
  • 2,4,5-TP (Silvex)
  • Vinyl Chloride

Reactive

Hazardous waste classified as reactive includes the following:

  • Materials that tend to be unstable at normal temperatures and pressures
  • Water reactive materials
  • Explosives
  • Cyanide or sulfide bearing wastes

Examples include:

  • Pyrophoric metals such as sodium
  • Cyanide wastes
  • Ethers
  • Peroxides

Corrosive

Hazardous waste classified as corrosive includes:

  • Aqueous solutions with pH less than 2 or greater than 12.5
  • Liquids that corrode steel at a rate greater than 6.35 mm per year (0.25 inches per year) at a test temperature of 55°C (130°F)

Examples include:

  • Strong acids
  • Alkaline degreasers
  • Water/wastewater treatment chemicals
  • Any debris that is contaminated with this material

7.15 Reactive and Potentially Explosive Chemicals

Reactive chemicals such as strong oxidizers and reducers, and air/water-reactive chemicals must be disposed of through the hazardous waste management program. Due to their reactive nature, it is important to minimize the quantity of these chemicals in storage. If the container's integrity seems compromised, promptly dispose of the chemicals as hazardous waste. Never dispose of reactive chemicals such as sodium metal down the drain or in the normal trash. Such practices can cause fires, toxic vapors and gases, and injury to people. When disposing of these compounds, note any special hazards on the Hazardous Waste Label.

Some of these compounds can become unstable and potentially explosive over time due to contamination with air, water, other materials, or when the chemical dries out. If you suspect any chemical could be potentially explosive, do not attempt to move the container. Some of these compounds are sensitive to shock, heat, and friction. Inform others in the lab or work area about the chemical and its potential explosion hazard. Submit a question using "askEHS." If there is an immediate potential hazard, please contact EHS at 607-255-8200 for more assistance.

Explosive Compounds

Examples of potentially explosive chemicals include:

  • Benzoyl peroxide (dry)
  • Diazo compounds
  • 2,4-Dinitrophenyl hydrazine (dry)
  • Nitrocellulose
  • Peroxide forming compounds
  • Picric acid (dry)
  • Sodium amide
  • Trinitro-compounds
