Significant Advances in Human Image Sensing Technology

One of the cutting-edge biometric identification tools recently showcased at trade events is the HVC-P2 from Omron Electronic Components LLC. This image-sensing camera module incorporates proprietary technology capable of recognizing human facial expressions, gender, age, gaze, and blinks.

Biometric identification is emerging as a transformative technology for self-service kiosks due to its rapid user recognition capabilities. As per research by Markets and Markets, the biometric system market is forecasted to nearly triple by 2022, with an annual growth rate of 16.79%, reaching $32.73 billion.

While the travel and immigration sectors dominate in biometric applications, there is a significant rise in use across financial services, retail, and healthcare markets.

The HVC-P2 from Omron Electronic Components LLC stands out as one of the most advanced biometric identification tools. It integrates sophisticated image-sensing capabilities into a compact module, enabling recognition of facial expressions, gender, age, gaze, and blinks.

The HVC-P2 offers a recognition speed ten times faster than its predecessor launched in March 2014, detecting human bodies up to four times per second within its detection range. The technology has been refined using data from over one million faces.

The module supports ten image-sensing functions to recognize different human attributes: 1) face detection, 2) human body detection, 3) hand detection, 4) face direction estimation, 5) gaze estimation, 6) blink estimation, 7) age estimation, 8) gender estimation, 9) expression estimation (including five facial expressions like neutral, happiness, surprise, anger, and sadness), and 10) face recognition.

Result and presumption data are output in digital format, including metrics like number of detections, angles, and age, along with textual data covering facial expressions and gender.

The unit also offers both close-range and long-distance scanning options, allowing users to select a suitable camera lens—either long-distance or wide-angle—based on their specific requirements.

Devices equipped with the HVC-P2 can unobtrusively detect and gauge user attributes and conditions, enabling tailored services based on those attributes.

Recognized applications for this technology include automated retail, digital signage, POS systems, vending, and ticketing. Marketing benefits encompass market analysis and age- and gender-specific advertising.

Customer benefits include enhanced privacy as image data does not need to be sent to a PC—only result data is transmitted; high processing speed; and reduced system costs since no server is required for image sensing.

The expansion of biometric technology will undoubtedly create new opportunities for self-service kiosks in industries where identity verification is crucial.
