Heat Treatment Processes
Soft Annealing
Heat the steel to 850ºC in a protective atmosphere, maintain for soaking, and then cool in the furnace at a rate of 10ºC/hr; allow air cooling once the temperature drops to 650ºC.
Stress Relieving
Perform stress relieving post-rough machining, heating to 650ºC, with a hold for 2 hours; subsequently cool slowly to 500ºC and continue with air cooling.
Hardening
Refer to the Hardening Diagram for procedure:
Preheat in two stages A: 650ºC and B: 850ºC
Austenitize at C: 990-ºC
Employ either direct cooling D or sectional cooling F: 500-550ºC
Hardening Diagram Tempering Diagram
Tempering
Refer to the Tempering Diagram to select appropriate tempering temperatures for desired hardness. For die-casting molds, temper at least 3 times.
For other applications associated with hot working or plastic molding, temper at least 2 times. (We suggest being tempered over 550ºC for a minimum of 2 hours. Post-tempering, allow cooling to room temperature.)
Advisory: Avoid tempering in the range of 425-550ºC to prevent temper brittlement.
Hardness: HRC Residual Austenite %
Tempering Temperature (2h+2h) ºC
Important Notes
1. Holding time refers to the total heating duration for die steel until Austenitization.
2. During the hardening phase, ensure the steel is heated to avoid oxidation or decarburization.
3. Steel needs immediate tempering once temperature falls to 50-70ºC.
4. For superior die properties, expedite the quenching speed while avoiding distortion or cracking.
