We address these inquiries and more in our complete list of Steel Building FAQ.
What is the estimated construction time for a Steel Building?
The time required to build a steel structure largely hinges on the client’s particular needs, specifications, and preferences.
This is one of the notable advantages of steel buildings; they can be easily tailored to fit your requirements. The delivery typically ranges from 6 to 8 weeks. After reviewing your specifications, you will have a clearer understanding of your timeline.
It’s important to note that erecting a steel building is usually much quicker than the construction of traditional buildings.
Here’s a rough estimate of the time needed to assemble the steel frame based on the building dimensions:
For a building measuring 40’ x 60’ x 14’: approximately 5 days with a crew.
For a building measuring 60’ x 100’ x 16’: around 7 days with a crew.
What constitutes a prefabricated steel building?
A prefabricated steel building is designed for specific locations and constructed based on the specifications required for its intended application, as provided by the owner.
In prefabricated steel constructions, most of the manufacturing is completed prior to delivery, including welding and cuts.
What are the advantages of using prefabricated steel buildings?
The major benefits of prefabricated steel buildings include:
- Rapid delivery and assembly timelines
- Pre-fabrication of welding and cutting processes at the factory
- Custom-designed to match your specific requirements
- Easy assembly, typically bolted together
- Fire-resistant properties of steel buildings
- Future expansion is relatively straightforward (explore our article on the ease of expanding a steel building)
Are steel buildings insulated?
Generally, steel structures are equipped with climate control features, utilizing six inches of vinyl-backed insulation on the roof and four inches within the walls.
Is it possible for me to build the structure myself?
While it may not be the most advisable choice, the convenience of steel buildings makes self-erection a viable option.
Prefabricated steel buildings come with specific components that are pre-welded, cut, and drilled for easy assembly with bolts.
If I choose to build it myself, what tools will I need?
In addition to common household tools, you will require industrial lifting equipment to position the rafters and columns, which can weigh between 500 and 700 pounds.
Additional equipment may include:
Track Loader
Forklift
Front-end Loader
Screw Guns
If I'd rather not construct the building myself, do you offer installation services?

What foundation requirements should I consider?
Typically, steel buildings are erected on a perimeter foundation or piers.
If a concrete slab is chosen, it often gets poured simultaneously as the perimeter foundation. However, certain steel buildings, such as those used on farms, may only require piers.
A closure strip designed to fit the wall panels is inserted between the base angle around the perimeter and the bottom of the wall panel, providing a perfect seal for the building.
As with many questions, several factors are contingent upon the intended use of your building and any customizations you might need.
Is a foundation necessary? What thickness is ideal for a foundation?
Your concrete supplier or engineer can verify whether your current foundation meets requirements. Ideally, at minimum, piers are required for the construction of the building.
While a foundation engineer should professionally determine the thickness, a general guideline for effective construction is a foundation thickness of no less than four to eight inches.
Who is responsible for designing the concrete slabs?
Your steel building will come equipped with an anchor bolt design that aligns with the building’s dimensions and reactions.
If you employ an engineer (which is advisable), they will use this information to properly design the foundation.
Can I get advice on the best type of steel building for my needs?
Your steel building manufacturer, such as CDMG, takes every client's needs seriously and is ready to provide guidance, consultation, and recommendations.
With extensive experience in steel buildings, CDMG’s experts are well-placed to direct you toward creating a steel structure that is tailored to your specific needs and preferences.
Is it possible to add doors and windows later on?
Your steel building can have pre-designed openings for windows and doors established during manufacturing. This will expedite both labor and time during the assembly of your steel structure.
Everything from bifold doors to sliding doors suited for aircraft hangars can be accurately designed to meet your requirements.
Can my building accommodate expansions?
Absolutely.
If you select expandable walls, your steel building can have additional frames added later, enabling future expansion.
As your enterprise grows, additional space may be essential. Whether you wish to leave a bay empty or incorporate extra walls, expandable walls make it all feasible.
Will my steel building adhere to local Building Department regulations?
The steel buildings you obtain from CDMG are guaranteed to comply with relevant building codes across all 50 states in the USA.
What is BIM Technology?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a technology that enables clients to visualize their structure digitally before any construction efforts commence.
This helps clients to identify the anticipated final product along with any potential site complications or considerations moving forward.

What do I need to begin building a Steel Building?
Essentially, for constructing a steel building, all that is truly required is a cordless drill and a wrench. No framing or carpentry expertise is necessary since all components are pre-measured and cut at the factory.
Our steel building can be assembled independently, but having extra hands can significantly simplify the process, especially for lifting steel arches into position. With a few tools, some assistance, and a bit of time, you can easily construct your steel building!
How quickly can I construct a Steel Building?
Building a steel structure involves a straightforward process, typically broken down into four major steps that can often be completed in a weekend or a couple of days. It is common for our clients to finish the installation in just one or two days, making it a manageable weekend endeavor. Below is a quick overview of the four steps:
1
Pouring the Footings - This is the crucial first step. Ensure your foundation is level and meets the necessary dimensions for securing the arches.
2
Assembling the Arches - With a socket wrench, you can swiftly prepare the steel building arches for raising.
3
Raising the Arches - Get assistance to elevate the arches and secure them to the foundation.
4
Endwalls & Finishing Touches - Attach steel endwalls, incorporate doors, windows, and ventilation to complete your steel structure. Only a power drill and wrench are necessary for final assembly.
Should I hire a contractor for the process?
Our steel structures are designed for user-friendly construction, complete with detailed installation guidelines. The most challenging aspect generally involves preparing the foundation. If you're uncertain about establishing the foundation yourself, it’s advisable to engage a contractor for this part to ensure stability and perfect alignment with the base. Alternatively, you may choose to hire a contractor for the entire assembly of the steel building.
