H15 bulbs are a relatively newer player in the extensive lineup of automotive lighting options. Traditionally, headlight bulbs have served dual roles for various light beams. The once-popular H4 Halogen bulb, which was used for both dipped beams and flashing, is becoming less common in modern headlights, often replaced in vans and certain Japanese models.
In recent years, European vehicle manufacturers have transitioned to separate bulbs for distinct functions. The H7 is frequently utilized for dipped beams while H1 is reserved for main beams.
Additionally, as the demand for Dedicated Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) increased, manufacturers were compelled to innovate. DRLs are low-wattage lights that automatically engage during daylight hours, enhancing visibility for pedestrians and surrounding traffic. These have to be effective during the day but should remain off when night falls.
Some companies opted to integrate an additional sidelight such as the T10 501 w5w into the headlights. These low-powered bulbs activate when it’s light outside but deactivate during the night. Alternatively, some manufacturers have chosen to use a twin filament bulb that offers brightness during the day but dims when the dipped beams are switched on.
Conversely, utilizing the H15 bulb base has enabled the creation of a twin filament bulb capable of generating substantial light output during the day, which switches off at night instead of dimming. The second filament is activated for the main beam function (or flash).
Below is a representation of the standard H15 Halogen bulb. This bulb, characterized by the PGJ23t-1 base, is a dual filament variant, offering a Hi/Lo beam pattern akin to the H4 bulb.

Numerous manufacturers have adopted the H15 bulb primarily for managing DRL and main beam functions. A wide range of H15 LED and H15 Xenon HID replacements are now available for purchase online. Consumers eager to upgrade their H15 lighting often gravitate towards affordable LED options, only to discover that while they excel with DRLs, they underperform for the main beam function once installed.

However, many of these budget H15 LED options suffer from significant design flaws, primarily resulting from their inability to dissipate heat due to the absence of built-in heat sinks or cooling fans. Consequently, manufacturers are restricted in their selection of appropriate LED chips/bulbs, as high-powered LED variants generate considerable heat and necessitate effective cooling solutions. This issue can be addressed through incorporating heat sinks or a combination of heat conductive materials and cooling fans, which help maintain lower temperatures, enabling prolonged operation at maximum power.
Our High Powered H15 LED bulbs produce an exceptionally bright white light for both DRL and main beam functions. Based on extensive testing, we evaluated various H15 bulb types — some with heat sinks only and others incorporating both heat sinks and fans. Our findings indicate that both types significantly outperformed the low-cost alternatives examined earlier, but the choice between a heat sink or a cooling fan typically depends on personal preference among consumers.
