RDP (Redispersible Polymer Powder) or VAE Powder
(Vinyl Acetate Ethylene Copolymer)
is a water-soluble re-dispersible powder. It is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. It dissolves in water easily and forms emulsion quickly, RDP could offer strong adhesive and stretching force to improve the workability, flexibility and water-proofing of the materials. Redispersible Polymer Powder is a kind of free-flowing white powder,which is spray-dryed by polymer emulsion and after subsequent treatment to keep the stability of powder appearance and character. The mainly application is in construction dry-mixed mortar,and have excellent performance in increasing the dry mortar cohesion,adhesion and flexibility.
The Rdp/redispersible polymer powder(VAE) is a water-soluble re-dispersible powder. It is a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. It uses polyvinyl alcohol as a protective colloid. By adding re-dispersible latex powder, the performance of mortar with cement or gypsum as the substrate can meet the needs of various constructions.
The RDP/Redispersible Polymer Powder(redispersible emulsion powder) is physically mixed with other inorganic adhesives (such as cement, hydrated lime, gypsum, clay, etc.) as well as various aggregates, fillers and other additives (such as hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, polypolysaccharide (starch ether), cellulose fiber, etc.) to make dry mix mortar. When the dry powder mortar is mixed in water, under the action of hydrophilic protective colloid and mechanical shear force, the latex powder particles can be quickly dispersed into water, and enough to make the redispersible latex powder fully film. The different composition of rubber powder has an impact on the rheological properties of mortar and various construction properties: the affinity of latex powder to water when it is redispersed, the different viscosity of latex powder after dispersion, the impact on the gas content of mortar and the distribution of bubbles, the interaction between rubber powder and other additives, so that different latex powder has an effect of increasing fluidity, increasing thixotropy and increasing viscosity.

Emulsion and redispersible emulsion powder can form high tensile strength and bond strength on different materials after film formation, and they are combined with inorganic binder cement as the second binder in mortar, cement and polymer play corresponding special features respectively, so that the performance of mortar can be improved. By observing the microstructure of polymer-cement composite material, it is concluded that the addition of redispersible emulsion powder can make the polymer film and become a part of the pore wall, and the mortar forms a whole through the internal force, which improves the cohesion strength of the mortar, and thus increases the failure stress and ultimate strain of the mortar. The long-term properties of redispersible emulsion powder in mortar were studied. It was observed by SEM that after 10 years, the microstructure of polymer in mortar still did not change, and it maintained stable bond, flexural and compressive strength and good hydrophobic properties. Wang Ziming et al. [11] studied the formation mechanism of the redispersible emulsion powder on the strength of the ceramic tile binder, and found that after the polymer dried into film, on the one hand, the polymer film formed a flexible connection between the mortar and the ceramic tile; on the other hand, in the newly mixed mortar, the polymer increased the gas content of the mortar and affected the formation and wettability of the surface. The polymer will also have a better effect on the hydration process and shrinkage of the cement in the binder, all of which will have a better help in improving the bond strength.
