What is Single Ply Roofing? - Types, Tips & Advantages - alwitra
Discover the various types of single ply roofing materials and what to consider for your next roofing project.
With competitive price and timely delivery, PENNPLAN sincerely hope to be your supplier and partner.
What is Single Ply roofing?
Single Ply roofing is a complete roofing system consisting of durable and flexible membranes layered into flexible sheets of synthetic polymer to waterproof a flat roof. It can be divided into two main groups: thermoplastics and synthetic rubber.
This method is popular within commercial and industrial buildings but is also installed on residential properties.
At ICB Waterproofing we are one of the UK’s leading distributors of alwitra® membrane. Available in a range of colours, at a width of up to 2.05 m with a standard length of 25 m, i. e. up to 50 m2 of seamless waterproofing, providing optimum waterproofing solutions for each roof shape and application method.
Types of Single Ply Roofing Membranes
- Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)
- Polyvinylchloride Plasticised (PVCp)
- Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)
- Flexible Polyolefin / Thermoplastic Polyolefin (FPO / TPO)
Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA)
EVA waterproofing membranes are made up of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymers which gives them unique properties like flexibility, toughness, and resistance to environmental stress.
waterproofing membranes" href="https://www.alwitra.co.uk/evalon-products">EVALON® waterproofing membranes are superior-quality EVA membranes fit for all types of flat roof constructions and application methods as well as for waterproofing of foundations. They are free from potentially harmful volatile plasticisers and consist of a high polymer alloy of EVA and PVC, resulting in a service life of 50 years.
Polyvinylchloride Plasticised (PVCp)
Generally, there are many PVC-p membranes available from sources all over Europe. All plasticised PVC membranes consist of 3 groups of raw materials: PVC (min. 50% according to DIN), Plasticiser (max. 50%), Stabilisers (min. 1%), fillers and pigments (max 16%).
When it comes to quality, there is a third factor that must be taken into consideration: many membranes are laminated and contain several layers. There is normally a bottom layer, a scrim or fabric reinforcement, and a top layer. Looking carefully at the cross-section of such a membrane, the bottom layer is usually thicker than the top layer.
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM)
EPDM is a synthetic rubber-based membrane that is widely relied upon when waterproofing low-sloped roofs. It offers excellent resistance to roots, chemicals, and the climate, and its superior properties are effective at resisting heat, weathering, and UV radiation. The black colour of the membrane is a result of the added carbon black which enhances the UV resistance by converting rays into heat.
For the application of EPDM, it is compatible with bitumen however adhesives and primers can also be used.
Flexible Polyolefin / Thermoplastic Polyolefin (FPO / TPO)
FPO & TPO are synthetic membranes that are a mix of Polypropylene (PP) and Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR). They are marketed as a product that joins EPDM and PVCp together while leaving aside the associated weaknesses of both. For this reason, they share the UV resistance qualities of EPDM whilst retaining the ability to be applied using hot air welding.
What are the advantages of Single Ply Roofing?
- Ease of installation
- Energy efficient
- High durability
- Low maintenance
- Great versatility
Ease of installation
Single ply roofing membranes are lightweight and easy to install. Since the membrane is only one layer, labour costs are reduced as the installation time is shorter, when compared to multi-layered membranes.
EVALON® single ply membranes are self-adhered, resulting in a simplified installation process without the need of a flame. Simply prime, peal and stick the membrane to the surface. It’s as easy as that.
Energy efficient
Single ply roofing membranes have high solar reflectance and thermal emittance values, helping to reduce energy consumption and keep buildings cooler. As the roofing system is airtight from the welding process, air leakage is prevented, and further energy efficiency is obtained.
High durability
Single ply roofing membranes are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and are resistant to punctures, tears, and UV radiation. Its superior surface toughness allows for fewer repairs and reduced deterioration. These qualities allow alwitra® EVALON® membranes to have a service life of 50 years.
Low maintenance
Single ply roofing requires minimal maintenance, saving time and money on repairs and inspections. These roofing systems can last a lifetime, with minimal amounts of maintenance, however annual checks are still recommended for peace of mind.
Great versatility
Single ply roofing can be installed on various types of roofs and can accommodate different building designs and requirements. For example, alwitra® EVALON® membranes can be installed on steep sloped roofs, curved roofs, flat roofs, dormers and more.
What to consider when choosing your Single Ply Membrane.
- Climate
- Building design
- Budget
- Energy efficiency
- Maintenance requirements
When choosing single ply roofing materials, there are several factors to consider:
Climate
Consider the climate and weather conditions in your area. Some materials may be more suitable for hot climates, while others perform better in cold climates.
Building design
Consider the design and structure of your building. Certain materials may be better suited for flat roofs, while others are suitable for pitched roofs. Think about the system type and whether a mechanically fastened, fully adhered or hybrid system is the best choice for your project.
Budget
Determine your budget for the roofing project. Different materials have different costs, and different manufacturers/suppliers may price their products varyingly, so choosing one that fits your budget is important.
Energy efficiency
If energy efficiency is a priority, consider materials with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance values. This will help reduce your energy bills and keep your building cooler.
Maintenance requirements
Evaluate the maintenance requirements of each material. Some may require regular inspections and maintenance, while others are more low maintenance.
By considering these factors, you can select the single ply roofing material that best suits your building's needs and requirements.
Tips for maintaining your Single Ply Roof.
- Yearly inspections
- Clearing deposits
- Checking for punctures and tears
Yearly inspections
A yearly inspection is recommended so that any debris, rubbish or deposits of dirt or leaves can be removed from the gutters and outlets. This is especially important after large amounts of rainfall or severe storms.
Clearing deposits
Most deposits can be washed away with water; for greasy deposits, a domestic detergent can be used to clean the surface. In the case of a chemical spillage, the affected roof area should be cleaned using a detergent and then flushed with copious amounts of water.
Checking for punctures and tears
Check that the seams are complete and if you notice any leaks, tears, or punctures, address them promptly to prevent further damage.
Any damage should be reported to the roofing contractor responsible for the installation of the membrane.
By following these maintenance tips, you can prolong the lifespan of your single ply roofing and avoid costly repairs.
