This is specified on drawings - 6X6 #8 WELDED WIRE FABRIC. Would you take that as 8 gauge?

Going by the Wire Reinforcement Institute's "WWR For Structural Applications: A Discussion of Current Product Knowledge and Practices", it's either 8 gauge or W8. Big difference. Are these new drawings that you're reviewing/doing delegated design for, or is this an old drawing for a structure you're looking into modifying/reinforcing?

New drawings. Architect called it out that way. For a slab on grade.

The ASTM spec has specifically changed to Welded Wire Reinforcement:

Quote (ASTM A1064-18, 1 Scope, NOTE 1)

Welded wire for concrete reinforcement has historically been described by various terms: welded wire fabric, WWF, fabric, and mesh. The wire reinforcement industry has adopted the term welded wire reinforcement (WWR) as being more representative of the applications of the products being manufactured. Therefore, the term welded wire fabric has been replaced with the term welded wire reinforcement in this specification and in related specifications.

Probably best to check with them. That's not an industry-standard call-out as far as I'm aware. After all, they're still calling it welded wire. The ASTM spec has specifically changed to Welded Wire Reinforcement:

I looked on the internet:

  • Company One, a rebar fabricator who listed WWF on their website; "we're a rebar fabricator, we don't sell that," from an employee who could care less and couldn't get me off the phone fast enough.
  • Company Two, who listed WWF on their website, "sorry, we don't have it, but company Three and Four might" from a helpful guy.
  • Company Three, "we have every kind of WWF you need, as long as it's 2.8 or 1.4 gauge."
  • Company Four, "is this domestic or foreign, you have the wrong number" and "we have it," but then when called again didn't.
Why is this stuff so hard to find? This has happened to me before. Someone is going to say, check availability, but I'm used to going to the ACI and just picking out standard sizes. The WRI needs to list standard available sizes, so I don't have to worry about tracking it down.

Welded Wire Mesh

Construction material

A building worker is spraying shotcrete on welded wire mesh.

Welded wire mesh, or welded wire fabric, or "weldmesh" is an electric fusion welded prefabricated joined grid consisting of a series of parallel longitudinal wires with accurate spacing welded to cross wires at the required spacing.

Machines are used to produce the mesh with precise dimensional control. The product can result in considerable savings in time, labor, and money.

Uses of Welded Wire Mesh

The welded wire mesh is a metal wire screen that is made up of low carbon steel wire or stainless steel wire. It is available in various sizes and shapes. It is widely used in sectors like agriculture, industry, transportation, horticulture, and food procuring. It is also used in mines, gardening, machine protection, and other decorations.

Weld mesh is the term given to the kind of barrier fencing that is manufactured in square, rectangular, or rhombus mesh from steel wire, welded at each intersection.

Welded wire fabric (WWF) is also sometimes used in reinforced concrete, notably for slabs.

Types of Welded Wire Mesh

Welded Wire Fabric (WWF) for Concrete Slab Reinforcement

This type of mesh is a square grid of uniformly placed wires, welded at all intersections, meeting the requirements of ASTM A185 and A497 or other standards. The sizes are specified by combining the spacing, in inches or mm, and the wire cross-section area in hundredths of square inches or mm2. The common sizes are in the following table:

Imperial Size Metric Equivalent Weight Imperial Weight Metric
6x6 W1.4/W1.4 152x152 MW9.1/MW9.1 20 lb/100 sf 0.98 kg/m2
6x6 W2.1/W2.1 152x152 MW13.1/MW13.1 30 lb/100 sf 1.47 kg/m2

Electro Galvanized Welded Wire Mesh with Square Opening

This type of welded wire mesh is designed for building fencing and other infrastructural purposes. It is a corrosion-resistant wire mesh that is largely used in structural buildings. It is also available in different forms like rolls and panels for industrial uses.

Hot Dipped Galvanized Welded Mesh

This mesh wire is generally made up of plain steel wire. During processing, it goes through a hot zinc covering process. This welded mesh with a square opening is ideal for animal cage structuring, fabricating wire boxes, grilling, partition making, grating purposes, and machine protection fencing.

PVC Coated Welded Mesh

PVC coated welded mesh with plastic covering is constructed with high-quality galvanized iron wire. It has PVC powder covering that is processed by an automatic machine. The smooth plastic coating on this corrosion-protective wire is attached with a strong adhesive which increases the durability of the wire. It is used in fencing residential and official properties like gardens, parks, and buildings. The PVC coated welded mesh, available in rolls and panels, also comes in different colors like white, black, green, etc.

Welded Stainless Steel Mesh

This kind of welded mesh wire is mainly used for industrial fencing purposes. Made of stainless steel, it has high strength and integrity. This corrosion-resistant meshed wire is long-lasting and widely used in transportation, agriculture, mining, horticulture, entertainment, and other service sectors.

Welded Wire Fencing

This type of meshed wire is available in rolls or panels for fencing purposes. Also referred to as "weldmesh", it is available with or without galvanization. The non-galvanized version is less expensive.

Welded Steel Bar Gratings

This type of welded mesh wire provides advantages like high strength, easy installation, and feasible cost. It is mostly used for grating roads, making drainage coverings, and building safety walls. It also has uses in chemical plantations, platform grating, metallurgy, etc.
