How Does a Solar Panel Work?

Solar panels are a reliable and sustainable source of energy. They convert sunlight into electricity through a process known as the photovoltaic effect.

Step 1: Absorption.

Solar panels are covered in photovoltaic cells, which are made up of a semiconductor material such as silicon. When sunlight hits the panel, the cells absorb photons. Electrons in the semiconductor material absorb the energy from the photons and become excited, moving around more than they would at rest.

Step 2: Charge Separation.

Still, it is not enough to generate an electrical current. The excited electrons need to flow in a specific direction to create a charge. Therefore, the panel has an electric field that helps to separate the charges from the excited electrons, pushing them in the right direction.

Step 3: Electrical Current.

Now that the charges are separated, the electrons are free to move along the circuit connected to the panel. They move from the negative side of the panel to the positive side, generating an electrical current that can be used to power homes, businesses, and other electrical devices.

Step 4: Inverter.

A solar inverter is used to convert the direct current (DC) generated from the solar panel into alternating current (AC) that can be used to power electrical devices in a home or business.

Step 5: Net Metering.

If a solar panel system generates more electricity than is needed, excess power can flow back into the electrical grid. This process, called net metering, allows homeowners to receive credits on their utility bills for the excess power they generate.

Step 6: Battery Storage.

Solar panels can also be connected to battery storage systems. These batteries store excess energy generated by the panels during the day, which can then be used during periods of low sunlight or during power outages.

Overall, solar panels are a renewable and sustainable source of energy that can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels. By understanding how they work, homeowners can make informed decisions when choosing to invest in solar energy for their homes.
